Weekend Update: Sat, Feb 17

MiddBlog may have failed you yesterday, but we were down due to inclement weather. Here's the Saturday breakdown:

Relay for Life Kickoff #2
As if you missed it the first time, Relay is the largest single event on campus. This meeting is for team captains. Start a team, raise money, and run to fight cancer.

Time: 2-4PM
Venue: McCullough Hall

Men's Basketball vs. Colby (First-Round)
This is the first NESCAC Tournament game to be held at Middlebury. Go support the Panthers in this historic game. 1$ tickets at door.

Time: 2PM
Venue: Pepin Gym

Hirschfield Film: Capote
Based on the creepy book and real events, this movie is an amazing indie film that keeps you uncomfortable all the time. Give Infamous a try too.

Time: 3PM and 8PM
Venue: Dana Auditorium

Women's Hockey vs. Hamilton

Time: 4PM
Venue: Kenyon Arena

Mischords with Fordham Ramblers
This gig is unconfirmed but a little acappella on a Saturday night can't hurt, right?

Time: 8PM
Venue: Chateau Grand Salon

MiddAmnesty: Mardi Gras
Get your swing on with a live New Orleans jazz band (plus the Butch Divas). $5 donations go to benefit Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. Get some beads and stuff too. Come dressed up!

Time: 9PM-12AM
Venue: McCullough Social Space

Biggest Lunar New Year Ever!
The newly formed Chinese club hits the ground running by organizing a multi-club party. First, fill up on food in Coffrin Lounge then head over for the LoFo dance party sponsored by KoreaTown. MASO and J-Club are pitching in on the food-making!

Time: 9PM-12AM
Venue: Coffrin / Lower Forest

Eski-hoes and Their Bros
Not sure if you really should go to this one but I know many of you will... tagline: "it's like winter but slutty."

Time: 9:30PM - 6AM
Venue: Peary Mod

Casa Italiana
The Italian House is hosting a party. They say, "take off your clothes and come join the mess!"

Time: 10PM-3AM
Venue: Italian House

Saturday, January 20, 2007

Weekend Update: Sat Jan 20

Hirschfield Films: Howl's Moving Castle
If you've been in the animation/cartoon/comic book j-term class, you know how good some of the more unknown animated works are. This 2004 movie is one of them originally in Japanese and dubbed over with English by biggies such as Jean Simmons.

Time: 3PM and 8PM showings
Venue: Dana Auditorium

Men's Ice Hockey vs. St. Anslem
Yesterday's loss in the last few seconds of the game was heartbreaking. One adoring fan said, "I feel like my dad died." Come see the hockey team make up for it today.

Time: 4PM
Venue: Kenyon Arena

Guitar Hero Tournament
(not) enough said?

Time: 7PM
Venue: Bowker House

Stuck in the Middle: SIM Keeps You Warm
If you haven't yet experienced a big SIM acappella concert, this is your first chance of the year. With a winter/fireplace theme, SIM will be crooning pop hits and rock favorites with their classic friendly style and crazy antics. This isn't your ordinary acappella concert, it's a SIM concert.

Time: 7:30PM
Venue: Mead Chapel ($1)

Jaime Masefield and the Jazz Mandolin Project
This should be a fun time with a multimedia performance of video footage set to music set to Leo Tolstoy's famous short story: "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" Talented musician plus a well thought out performance equals a must-see event

Time: 8PM
Venue: CFA Concert Hall

IVCF: Juarez Jam Variety Show
After realizing the conflict with the SIM show (above), the IVCF pushed back this show a half hour so people would be more likely to go to both. Realistically, how long do you want to sit and listen to a concert? That said, the Juarez Jam is a short and to the point show unlike the never-ending variety show last night. It also is a good cause: missionary work in Juarez over Feb break!

Time: 8:30PM
Venue: McCullough ($2)

The Supermarket
Finally playing their own show, The Supermarket is very up-and-coming with all-star keyboard/vocalist Mike West ('09.5). Go rock out to this stellar campus band.

Time: 9PM
Venue: The Chateau Grand Salon

Cook Commons Prom
This is a big Cook Commons event (okay not quite the "baby-making foam party" which, btw, is happening again this May). If you feel like your high school prom didn't do you justice, this is time to make it up. Formal attire not required but it would be a nice touch. Bring a date? Haha, yeah right.

Time: 9PM-1AM
Venue: Forest East Lounge

Weekend Update, Combined Edition

Friday, January 5th
Is Cynicism Honest? A Lecture by Dick Keyes
Sponsored by the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Dick Keyes is an expert when it comes to modern religion. Thinking your religion is a bit dated? Dick Keyes presents a fascinating topic focusing in on cynicism that seems quite prevalent in young people today.
(4:30PM in MBH 216)

Cafecito Hour: Marie Horbar ('09)
Marie Horbar ('09) presents on her travels to the Dominican Republic and her work at a sustainable coffee farm on the slopes of Pico Duarte (the largest mountain in the Carribean). She's the first student to present a Cafecito Hour this year!
(4:30PM in Carr Hall/PALANA)

MCAB FFF: Beerfest
Two brothers travel to Oktoberfest in Germany... beer, beer games, and fight club ensue.
(showings at 4:30, 7, 9:30PM in Dana Audit)

Men's Ice Hockey vs. Skidmore
Yes, that's the Saratoga Spring Skidmore College Thoroughbreds. Now what kind of mascot is a thoroughbred? They might as well just call themselves "the horses."
(7PM at Kenyon Arena)

MCAB Dance Party: What I Want to Be When I Grow Up
So dress like what you want to be when you grow up. So, basically, an 80s hipster look will do just fine.
(11PM-2AM in McCulloch (sic) Social Space)

Saturday, January 6th
Men's Hockey vs. Castleton
(4:00PM in Kenyon Arena)

24 Hours
No, not Jack Bauer. 5 Plays written and directed in 24 hours and performed in 1.5 hours. Yes, that ought to be fun. Nothing like seeing really tired people -- supposedly, if you're really tired, it's as if you're drunk.
(8PM in Hepburn Zoo, tickets at door)

Sunday, January 7th

Women's Basketball vs. Renssalaer
I'm not quite sure where Renessalaer comes from but with a name like that, who cares. See our ladies go to head to head in this matchup.
(12PM in Pepin Gym)

Organic Garden Meeting
One of the few hidden treasures of Midd is the organic garden located out in the field behind Ross. Go to their meeting to get involved for the spring. Volunteer opportunities are open all year and a few paid positions available during the summer
(6:30PM in Ross Seminar Room B11)

Date: Saturday-Sunday, December 2-3rd, 2006
Time: 9AM-5PM, 10AM-2PM
Venue: Pearsons Lounge

Swim Team vs. Amherst
Okay, of all the swim meets of the year, this is the one to go to. Heck, I've never even been to the nanotorium but Midd is going to duke it out like fish because Amherst is a tough opponent. Support your panthers!

Date: Saturday, December 2nd, 2006
Time: 1PM

Can anyone truly deny themselves one of Jack Nicholson's greatest movies ever? Heartbreaking, really...

Date: Saturday, December 2nd, 2006
Time: 3PM, 8PM
Venue: Dana Auditorium

Fall Dance Concert
If you didn't catch this absolutely ridiculous show last night, go tonight! There are some powerful modern pieces, some old-school favorites, and more. Perhaps you'll see the performers rushing off stage to be at MiddDance too! Tix: $3

Date: Saturday, December 2nd, 2006
Time: 8PM
Venue: CFA Dance Theater

MiddDance: So You Think Midd Can Dance?
Well, okay, besides blatantly ripped off and uncreative posters, this should still be a fun one. See you friends mix it up with lots of everything (perhaps a little heavy on the hip-hop, though). Dance for the masses! Tix: $2

Date: Saturday, December 2nd, 2006
Time: 8:30PM (not 8PM)
Venue: McCullough Social Space

The Red Party
Celebrating the World Aids Week, Dawn's Basement (do they like perform every weekend?) and the Dead Jettsons (Oh Dante Taylor is like my freshman crush) will be heating things up in LoFo. Live band vs. SketchCullough? I say stay in LoFo until you just can't stand it no more. Wear red. Entry fee goes to support finding a cure for AIDS.

Date: Saturday, December 2nd, 2006
Time: 10PM-2AM
Venue: Lower Forest (LoFo)

SketchCullough: Late Night Dance Party
Sponsored by MiddDance and MCAB, this LNDP might bring out more than just the usual bump and grind. Go and find out what you made of by dancing up a storm. Or just be sketch like every other weekend...

Date: Saturday, December 2nd, 2006
Time: 11PM-2AM
Venue: McCullough Social Space

Saturday, November 11, 2006

Weekend Update: Saturday

Football vs. Tufts University
Okay, it's game time. Watch as Midd throws it down. Word has it that if they win, they'll have a party. If they don't win, um...they'll have a party?

Date: Saturday, November 11th, 2006
Time: 12:30PM-3:30PM
Venue: Alumni Stadium

Native American Cultural Performance

Okay, granted this event seriously needs a better title, this should be a fun and informative continuation on the journey of Native American Heritage Month. Hey, you can join in on a few social dances too!

Date: Saturday, November 11th, 2006
Time: 3-5PM
Venue: CFA Dance Theater (downstairs)

Hirschfield Film: Mad Hot Ballroom

This is a cute, if I dare use that word, story of New York city public school kids who learn to dance ballroom. This is your chance to see an indie movie in English, if you haven't been into the last several weeks' foreign films.

Date: Saturday, November 11th, 2006
Time: 3PM and 8PM showings
Venue: Dana Auditorium

Challenging Complacency Symposium: Lamont Hiebert in Concert
Raising awareness about global sex trafficking of kids, Hiebert rocks the house with the band Ten Shrekel Shirt. Plus, everyone knows Christian rock/guitar songs are taking the world by storm (no really, I'm serious...). Put on by the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, this should be a fun and interesting event. Lecture earlier at 4PM in the Chateau.

Date: Saturday, November 11th, 2006
Time: 8-10PM
Venue: McCullough Social Space

Dawn's Basement in Pearsons
Live fiddlin' jams from the hottest band on campus with The Supermarket opening for them. Should be hot in herre.

Date: Saturday, November 11th, 2006
Time: 10PM-2AM
Venue: Pearsons Lounge (I wonder who lives in that room right inside the doors to the lounge...)

SketchCullough LNDP: Lei's on the Beach

You know you've missed it... That odd dance party that doesn't start heating up until midnight. You're not quite sure who's touching you but you know that at this point in the evening, it doesn't matter. Beach/Hawaiian theme for tonight.

Date: Saturday, November 11th, 2006
Time: 10PM-1AM
Venue: McCullough Social Space

Weekend Update: Saturday

Hirschfield Film: Good Morning, Night

Date: Saturday, November 4th, 2006
Time: 3PM and 8PM
Venue: Dana Auditorium

Beth Thompson Kaiser in Concert
Beth, best known for being the voice teacher of about half of the students that sing on campus, is having a concert chronicling American song through the ages. Should be fun even if you're not one of her students. She has a heck of a voice so lend her your ear (or ears).

Date: Saturday, November 4th, 2006
Time: 8PM
Venue: CFA Concert Hall

Bobolinks + Amalgamates = Woah
The Bobos are hosting the Tufts Amalgamates, a well known and acoustically sound group. Go check 'em out even if you're not an acappella connoisseur like Jaime Lam ('09) or Rohan Maitra ('09). Plus the Bobos are fun too. They promise to get you to Tim Young before 9PM.

Date: Saturday, November 4th, 2006
Time: 8PM
Venue: Pearsons Lounge

MCAB: Tim Young, Comedian
Flying in from Wisconsin, Young should have some good material for the Middlebury audience. He's been on "Last Comic Standing" and basically works the college circuit pretty hard. Plus, MiddKids always come out of comedians. Could be sold out, if you're not careful. One show only. Tickets in dining halls.

Date: Saturday, November 4th, 2006
Time: 9PM
Venue: McCullough Social Space

Time: 11PM-2AM
Venue: Coltrane Lounge (back of Adirondack)

Sound Investment Jazz Ensemble Dance Party (Contra)
As if busting out a Lindy Hop move or two isn't enough, Sound Investment should be throwin' down the 'tunes in the CFA. Last time, there were just a bunch of old folks from town dancing the night away. Don't let that happen again, folks. Savor the jazz, there certainly ain't enough of it on campus.

Date: Saturday October 21, 2006
Time: 9PM
Venue: CFA Lower Lobby

MCAB Casino Royale
Don't lie. You've been brushing up on your poker skills all semester with those semi-illegal gambling pools you've run out of your dorm room. Now show off. Blackjack, roulette, poker, craps, baccarat, etc. Be present to win door prizes (ski passes, yea!)
