WRMC Scores A. Bird for Concert

Okay, so this news is slightly dated (sorry):

WRMC 91.1FM has finally nailed down its artists for it's huge Sepomana concert on December 1st. Andrew Bird will be headlining. Anyone who's anyone knows about Andrew Bird and he was indeed an expensive one to bring (so much so that a special donation was made). Go to his website to hear a few tracks. He'll be perfoming with Mobius Band and Baby Dayliner. Not super mainstream but that is the point of WRMC's Sepomana.

WRMC kindly moved the concert up to the fall this year to generate greater interest in WRMC. Last year, it took place in the spring. Alas, the annual question is how to pronounce the title of the concert: Sepomana (which often is seen to be spelled Sepomania).

Tickets will be $8 in advance or $10 at the door.

Date: Friday, December 1st, 2006
Time: 9-12PM
Venue: McCullough Social Space

It is pronounced with emphasis on the second syllable: seh-PAW-muh-nuh... where the 'uh' represents that little upside down e in phonetics. Schwa? PAW isn't quite right -- it's the way the English would pronounce that same 'o' -- i.e. not a short 'a' the way most Americans would pronounce it.

The reason I know this is because I made up the word when we first held that big WRMC concert in spring of 1997 or thereabouts. We needed a name and Pauls Toutonghi '99 and I thought an irresistibly catchy word that didn't mean anything but seemed like it should mean something big would be better than any real word or more descriptive title we could come up with.

Sepomana came to mind and we persuaded the other WRMC members to go with it. The rest is concert and, hopefully, one day, dictionary history.
