Course Evaluations

So you think you're pretty slick for trashing that teacher in your evaluation. But think again, evaluations do matter!

When non-tenured professors go up for tenure, evaluations of that teacher play a role. In addition to publishing volumes and in-class observations, evaluations get reviewed by the admin committee that recommends tenure. If a teacher gets trashed a few too many times, it matters. While your single evaluation may not have an effect, the group sentiment does.

But what about tenured professors? They aren't going to be fired... Well, no, you can write what you want about them BUT a portion of their pay in annual salary is based on the evaluations. You are helping to determine how much they get paid.

You have the power. Now use it and spend an extra five minutes on those evaluations (unless, of course, you're just fighting the man=admin...)!

Winter Term Workshop Musts

As if life weren't hard enough debating the merits of your academic classes for the spring, Winter Term Workshop signup is tomorrow. Yup, it's one big free-for-all tomorrow morning, November 27th at 9AM where it's first come, first served on a whole host of courses taught by students, a few teachers, and someout outsiders. Here are a few highlights:

Weekly Meetings

  • Be a Viking in Four Short Weeks - I'm in awe of any workshop where you hike through the snow to build a sauna in the woods
  • West African Drumming and Dancing - If you can deal with being taught by a freshman, this should be an amazing class to satisfy your musical desires over J-Term
  • Tango for Beginngers - There's nothing more sexy than the Tango
  • Mush: Intro to Dogsledding - Haven't you always wanted to compete in the Iditarod?
  • Songwriting Workshop - You know you always wanted to be as cool as Jenny Schneider ('07), so prove you got what it takes to write the next Top 40 hit
  • Make Your Own Adirondack Chair - The question is what are you going to do with that chair once you've made it
  • Fundamentals of Cooking - If you were left high and dry over Thanksgiving due to the absence of dining services, it's time to get some real skillz with this workshop
  • Elements of Celtic Fiddle - Dawn's Basement and the fiddle is probably the hottest item of Fall 2006
  • Bagpiping for Dummies - If you just can't bear the fiddle, then bagpiping is for you
  • Wine Education - MiddKids must learn the finer points of alcohol

1-2 Meetings
  • Avalanche Awareness - Get out your dynamite and shovels
  • Defensive Driving - Nothing more boring but after this course you are licensed to drive Middlebury vans!
  • Ice Fishing - You know you're in Vermont when you can go ice fishing
  • Ice-Climbing - Crampons and all
  • Ski/Snowboard Tuning - Because it costs way too much to wax and sharpen your board/skis
  • Tote Bag Class - You already love them for toting your books, might as well customize your own

Bannerweb Fiasco

Thank you Bannerweb for the semi-annual shut down at 7:00:05AM. Sophomores just about peed their pants this morning when Bannerweb went down for 20+ minutes, marking the beginning of Winter Term registration. Let's just hope the eager freshies don't have the same issues tomorrow!

UPDATE: The freshies had similar issues. See some priceless screen shots courtesy of Hallie Gammon ('10).

Prospies

Prospies (prospective students) abound today. So keep an eye out for them. They generally look lost and confused and young...oh wait, so do freshmen.

This morning, one prospie takes it upon himself to interrupt by introducing himself to the professor in the middle of class, after showing up late. My he was much too eager to impress...

on the books...
